Sleepy John Estes

8 Aug

I started back at work this week and I happen to be parking at a new parking garage that has a southern music theme. I went to get on the elevator and guess who I spotted?

None other than Lauderdale County’s own Sleepy John Estes painted on the elevator doors.

I don’t know too much about Sleepy John Estes. I know that he was born John Adam Estes in 1899 in Ripley and his family eventually moved to Brownsville. He went on to become a successful pioneer of the blues. He is buried at Elam Baptist Church Cemetery in Durhamville.
